turboTEM is an Irish startup specialising in building the next generation of electron microscopy instruments. We aim to democratise advanced microscopy by creating higher-performance, more flexible and more affordable electron microscope components and accessories.

Role Description

turboTEM is looking for a qualified Mechanical Engineer to help design and build the next-generation high-end transmission electron microscope hardware. We’re seeking a passionate, driven individual with 3-5 years of industry experience and strong skills in mechanical design and analysis, systems integration, precision fabrication, rapid design iteration, CAD/CAM/CAE and digitalisation, plus any skills and experience you can bring to the table. 

You’ll be joining a small but growing team dedicated to making electron microscopy better, faster, cheaper and more accessible, based in Dublin, Ireland. This role is particularly well suited to a junior or early career engineer looking to take their professional skills and responsibilities to the next level.

Responsibilities

As a turboTEM employee, you’ll be joining a small, agile team working on solving engineering challenges with extreme precision and quality requirements. You’ll be expected to collaborate with the technical team and CTO and be comfortable managing your own time on solo work as well as working in a team to get the job done. As a small team you’ll be expected to work with some autonomy, be proactive in developing solutions and plans to deliver work internally and directly for customers, and be prepared to wear many hats

Requirements

To apply for this role, you must at a bare minimum:

• Hold an appropriate bachelor’s degree or other tertiary diploma qualification in Mechanical or Mechatronic engineering meeting level 7 of the Irish National Framework for Qualifications (NFQ – check here), preferably recognised by Engineers Ireland directly or under a mutual recognition agreement.
• At least 1 year’s professional work experience – this is not a graduate position.
• Fluent English speaker with professional-standard technical writing and presentation skills.
• Demonstrated competency with common IT and communications tools.
• Demonstrable hands-on experience with precision measurement, inspection, fabrication, maintenance and manipulation tools in workshop and field environments.

The successful applicant will preferably:

• Have demonstrable proficiency with industry-standard 3D modelling and drafting CAD tools, preferably SolidWorks.
• Have experience with simulation and analysis tools, particularly FEA, CFD or multiphysics sim.
• Have experience with robotics, kinematic design, process sensing, control area networks, task automation and manipulator design.
• Have experience with design for manufacture across a variety of fabrication methods and materials (e.g. subtractive metal cutting, additive manufacturing, welding, casting, etc).
• Have experience operating workshop machinery, particularly CNC equipment.
• Have simple programming experience in common scripting, systems or embedded programming language (e.g. Python, C/C++).
• Have some experience with basic electronics fabrication, handling and diagnostics.
